DE HALVE FINALE van de 9de editie van de Brouwland Biercompetitie heeft gisteren plaatsgevonden bij Spéciale Belge Taproom & Brouwerij, waar je trouwens kan genieten van 18 bieren op tap en nog meer op fles. 150 inzendingen werden geregistreerd, waarvan er 30 zijn gekozen om naar de halve finale te gaan. Melo Pepo mocht tijdens deze halve finale jureren samen met 8 andere juryleden en 3 BJCP Kapiteinen. 30 bieren werden (blind) geproefd en beoordeeld waarvan 10 doorgaan naar de volgende ronde. Tijdens de finale bij Boortmalt, worden de top 3 brouwers uitgekozen waarna deze 3 zullen strijden voor de medailles tijdens Brussels Beer Challenge.
Brouwland is dit jaar op zoek naar het beste SMASH-bier van Nederland & België. SMASH staat voor “Single Malt, Single Hop”. Brouwers mogen dus maar één moutsoort, één hopsoort, water & gist gebruiken. Andere ingrediënten zoals kruiden, fruit of andere smaakbrengers zijn niet toegestaan. Ondanks deze beperkingen kan men nog steeds een waaier aan verschillende bieren verkrijgen. Wij hebben gisteren onder andere de volgende bierstijlen mogen proeven SMASH Tripel, SMASH IPA, SMASH Saison, SMASH Pale Ale, SMASH Helles Bock & SMASH Barley Wine …
Beers from Limburg heeft na de competitie ook enkele brouwers mogen ontmoeten wat de ervaring compleet heeft gemaakt. Je kon de spanning in de ruimte voelen toen Sam Nagels (Brouwland) de top 10 mocht aankondigen. Proficiat aan de 10 finalisten maar ook aan de 20 brouwers die het niet gehaald hebben alsook de andere 120 brouwers die in dit avontuur zijn gestapt. Jullie (brouw) creativiteit draagt bij tot een rijkere bierwereld, zowel in België als in Nederland.
Het was ook fijn om gisteren nieuwe juryleden te ontmoeten en om ook een aantal bekenden terug te zien. Ik mocht samen met 3 toppers (Joris Mentens, Ferry Wijnhoven en onze kapitein Mattijs Nuyts) aan tafel zitten dus een dikke dankjewel aan hen; aan de andere juryleden voor een fijne babbel en aan Brouwland voor de organisatie. Mijn treinreis richting Limburg werd vergemakkelijkt in het bijzijn van Mendel Van Daele (Brouwland) & een lekker blikje bier … een perfecte afsluiter van een mooie namiddag in Antwerpen.
THE SEMI-FINAL of the 9th edition of the Brouwland Beer Competition took place yesterday at Spéciale Belge Taproom & Brewery, where you can enjoy 18 beers on tap and even more in bottles. 150 entries were registered, of which 30 were chosen to go to the semi-finals. Melo Pepo was allowed to judge during this semi-final together with 8 other judges and 3 BJCP Captains. 30 beers were tasted and assessed (blindly), 10 of which continued to the next round. During the final at Boortmalt, the top 3 brewers will be selected after which these 3 will compete for the medals during the Brussels Beer Challenge.
This year Brouwland is looking for the best SMASH beer in the Netherlands & Belgium. SMASH stands for “Single Malt, Single Hop”. Brewers are therefore only allowed to use one type of malt, one type of hop, water & yeast. Other ingredients such as herbs, fruit or other flavourings are not permitted. Despite these limitations, a range of different beers can still be obtained. Some of the beer styles we tasted yesterday are SMASH Tripel, SMASH IPA, SMASH Saison, SMASH Pale Ale, SMASH Helles Bock & SMASH Barley Wine ...
After the competition, Beers from Limburg also had the opportunity to meet a few brewers, which completed the experience. You could feel the tension in the room when Sam Nagels (Brouwland) announced the top 10. Congratulations to the 10 finalists, but also to the 20 brewers who did not make it, as well as the other 120 brewers who joined this adventure. Your (brewing) creativity contributes to a richer beer world, both in Belgium and the Netherlands.
It was also nice to meet new jury members yesterday and to see a few acquaintances again. I sat at the table with 3 top beer experts (Joris Mentens, Ferry Wijnhoven and our captain Mattijs Nuyts), so a big thank you to them; to the other jury members for nice beer chats and to Brouwland for the organisation. My train journey to Limburg was made easier in the presence of Mendel Van Daele (Brouwland) & a nice can of beer... a perfect end to a beautiful afternoon in Antwerp.
