NEW BEER IN LIMBURG! VALENTINUS West Coast IPA

VALENTINUS – WEST COAST IPA (alc. 5.4% vol, IBU:40). SMAAK/AROMA: VALENTINUS verwelkomt je met een mooie amberkleur en een goede schuimkraag. Citrus-, florale en hoppige aroma’s prikkelen je neus wanneer je het in het glas giet. De vijf hopsoorten trakteren je eerst op een hopexplosie met een heerlijke bitterheid, daarna volgen toetsen van dennen met grapefruit en een subtiele zoetheid. De afdronk is hoppig met een lichte fruitigheid en een zoete toets. Magnum werd als bitterhop gebruikt bij het begin van het koken; Citra, Cryo Cascade en Cryo Centennial werden toegevoegd bij het einde van het koken (aroma) en het bier werd daarna gedryhopt met een stevige portie Amarillo, Cryo Cascade en Cryo Centennial. Best geserveerd op 6°C.

WIST-JE-DAT?: VALENTINUS is vernoemd naar het Hasselts Heilig Paterke, dat over een eigen museum en grafkapel beschikt in de Minderbroederstraat (Hasselt). Brouwers Geert & Steven houden van bittere bieren en daarom besloten ze deze VALENTINUS West Coast IPA aan hun kernassortiment toe te voegen; samen met de andere 2 monumenten, ADELHEID Oaked Calvados Barley Wine & QUINTINUS Hasseltse Imperial Pale Ale.

WIST-JE-OOK-DAT?: Jan-Louis “Valentinus” Paquay (1828-1905), geboren te Tongeren, bad elke dag samen met zijn gezin en de kleine Louis ademde deze sfeer van volksdevotie totaal. Hij had van zijn kamer een kapelletje gemaakt waar hij bad en studeerde. Pater Valentinus, het heilig paterke van Hasselt, stond bekend als biechtvader na zijn intreden bij de franciscanen en priesterwijding in 1854. 30 jaar was hij kapelaan en biechtvader in de basiliek van Hasselt. Als kapelaan was hij sociaal & breeddenkend; als biechtvader volgde hij het voorbeeld van de vader van de verloren zoon uit het evangelie. Hij heeft vaak gepredikt tegen de toenmalige politieke liberale partijen omwille van hun bekrompen houding tegenover het godsdienstige. Hij was van nature zeer sociaal, maar de bazen van de jeneverfabrieken (toen de grootste werkgevers in Hasselt), waren meestal fanatiek liberaal en hadden graag dat de werkkrachten voor hun partij kozen. Pater Valentinus bracht, meestal gebroken en oververmoeid, duizenden uren door in de biechtstoel. Zijn grafkapel in Hasselt wordt druk bezocht door jong en oud en dit voor de meest uiteenlopende (dagelijkse) problemen want – en dat voelt men aan – hij luistert nog naar iedereen! Het heilig Paterke werd op 9 november 2003 zalig verklaard door Paus Johannes Paulus II. Het museum herbergt gebruiksvoorwerpen en kledingstukken van Pater Valentinus Paquay, naast heel wat informatie uit zijn directe leefwereld.

VALENTINUS – WEST COAST IPA (alc. 5.4% vol, IBU:40). TASTE/AROMA: VALENTINUS welcomes you with a beautiful amber colour and a good head. Citrus, floral & hoppy aroma’s will tickle your nose upon pouring it in the glass. The five types of hops (Magnum, Amarillo and further dry-hopped with a hearty portion of Citra, Cascade & Centennial hops) will treat you first to a hop explosion with a lovely bitterness, notes of pine will follow with grapefruit and a subtle sweetness. The aftertaste is hoppy with a light fruitiness and a sweet touch. Magnum was used as a bittering hop at the beginning of cooking; Citra, Cryo Cascade and Cryo Centennial were added at the end of the boil (aroma) and the beer was then dry hopped with a hearty portion of Amarillo, Cryo Cascade and Cryo Centennial. Best served at 6°C.

DID-YOU-KNOW?: VALENTINUS is named after the Hasselts Heilig Paterke, which has its own museum and burial chapel in the Minderbroederstraat (Hasselt). Brewers Geert & Steven like bitter beers, hence they decided to add this VALENTINUS West Coast IPA to their core range; joining the other 2 monuments, ADELHEID Oaked Calvados Barley Wine & QUINTINUS Hasseltse Imperial Pale Ale.

DID-YOU-ALSO-KNOW?: Jan-Louis “Valentinus” Paquay (1828-1905), born in Tongeren, prayed every day with his family and little Louis completely breathed this atmosphere of popular devotion. He had turned his room into a chapel where he prayed and studied. Father Valentinus, the holy father (Heilig Paterke) of Hasselt, was known as a confessor after his entry into the Franciscans and ordination as a priest in 1854. He was chaplain and confessor in the basilica of Hasselt for 30 years. As a chaplain he was social & broad-minded; as a confessor he followed the example of the father of the prodigal son in the Gospel. He often preached against the then political liberal parties because of their narrow-minded attitude towards religion. He was very sociable by nature, but the bosses of the jenever factories (then the largest employers in Hasselt) were usually fanatically liberal and wanted the workers to choose their party. Father Valentinus, usually broken and overtired, spent thousands of hours in the confessional. His burial chapel in Hasselt is frequently visited by young and old for the most diverse (daily) problems because - and one can feel this - he still listens to everyone! The Heilig Paterke was beatified on 9 November 2003 by Pope John Paul II. The museum houses utensils and clothing belonging to Father Valentinus Paquay, as well as a lot of information from his immediate life.
